
Heating Wide-Format Low-E Glass Without the Headaches
If you’re working with Low-E glass and your spans are pushing past 3 meters, you know the struggle. Trying to get a consistent temperature across that much surface area is a nightmare. Most off-the-shelf infrared lamps just aren’t built for this. You end up with annoying cold spots, or you’re forced to overlap a dozen different arrays, which just eats up all your floor space. That’s why we do things differently. We build custom, ultra-long short-wave infrared (SWIR) units specifically for these wide-span jobs.
The trick to long-span heat
Here’s the thing: when you’re dealing with a 3-meter stretch, you have to obsess over watt density and voltage drop. We use short-wave radiation because it hits the glass fast. It doesn’t linger; it penetrates. This is the only way to make sure your coating actually sticks the way it should. We spend a lot of time tweaking the filament length and diameter. Why? Because if the heat isn’t linear from one end to the other, the edges of your glass won’t hit the set-point. And in this business, “almost hot enough” is a failure.
Not just a longer tube
You can’t just take a standard heating tube and stretch it. If you do, it’ll snap under its own weight or crack the first time it heats up and cools down. We use heavy-duty quartz envelopes that can actually handle that kind of thermal expansion. We also add reinforced brackets so the units don’t start sagging over time. The wiring is where most people mess up. We use high-temp leads and specific connectors to keep the current steady. It stops those annoying “hot spots” from popping up right where the power plugs in.
The stuff nobody tells you
Now, let’s be real. These long units are power-hungry. A 3-meter array draws a massive amount of amperage. If your transformers or cables aren’t up to the task, you’ll get a voltage sag. That means your oven starts strong but the temperature dips right when you need it most at the far end. Plus, SWIR puts out an intense amount of heat. If you don’t position your cooling fans just right, you’re going to cook your machine frame. It takes a bit of planning, but once it’s dialed in, it just works.
