
How to pick the right infrared heat for your bathroom without wasting money
If you’re putting infrared lamps in a bathroom, the first thing you’ll see is the IPX5 rating. That’s basically your “safety first” check—it just means the unit can take a spray of water from any direction without blowing a fuse. But here is where people usually mess up: the wattage. Most people just buy the most powerful lamp they can find, thinking “more heat equals better.” In reality, that’s a great way to bake yourself alive or send your electric bill through the roof.
It’s about the surface, not the air
Here is the thing about infrared: it doesn’t actually warm up the air in the room. It warms up whatever it hits. Your skin, the floor, the towel rack. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a small lamp—something around 250W to 400W—is plenty. If you throw a 1000W beast in a closet-sized bathroom, you’ll end up with one oppressive hotspot that feels like standing too close to a campfire. Not exactly the “relaxing spa” vibe you’re going for. For the bigger bathrooms (6m² to 10m²), you’ll need more punch, maybe 600W or 1200W. But instead of one giant, blinding light, try splitting the load. Two smaller lamps spread apart do a much better job of covering the floor so you don’t have “cold zones.”
The trade-off with water-proofing
Since those IPX5 seals have to be tight to keep steam and splashes out, they can accidentally trap heat around the base of the lamp. Give your fixtures some breathing room. If they’re crammed too tight against the ceiling with no airflow, the housing gets too hot and you’ll burn out the filament way sooner than you should.

If you’re figuring out what to buy, keep it simple: **Small spaces (<4m²):**Stick to 250W-400W. Just enough to take the chill off. **Average bathrooms (4-7m²):**600W is usually the sweet spot. It warms up quickly but doesn’t eat too much power. **Large layouts (>7m²):**Go for 1000W+, or better yet, a couple of 500W units. Just don’t overdo it. If the lamp is too powerful for the space, it’ll keep clicking on and off every few minutes to keep the temperature steady. That constant cycling wears the lamp out fast.
