
Let’s Talk About Bathroom Heaters (And Why Your Eyes Hurt)
Most of those bathroom heat lamps use short-wave infrared to get you warm the second you flip the switch. It works. But let’s be honest: those standard halogen tubes are blinding. It’s like staring into the sun while you’re trying to dry off. And if you’ve got a baby in the house? That glare is way too much for their little eyes. So, instead of just cranking up the wattage, we decided to focus on the light itself.
Fixing the Glare
We added special coatings to the quartz glass to filter out that harsh, bright light. Basically, we push the energy further into the infrared range. The result? You still get all that cozy, dense heat to dry your skin or warm up the room, but without that “blinding” feeling you get from the cheap stuff. It’s much easier on the eyes.
Dealing with Steam and Splashes
Bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Between the steam and the occasional splash, electrical contacts usually rust out pretty fast. To stop that, we used IP-rated seals and housings that don’t corrode. We also wrapped the heating element in high-purity quartz so it can handle jumping from cold to hot without cracking. But here’s a pro tip:don’t seal the fixture too tight. I know it’s tempting to block every possible gap to keep moisture out, but the heat sink needs to breathe. If you choke the airflow, you’ll end up cooking the driver or killing the lamp’s lifespan. Give it some room to breathe.
The Trade-off
Now, full disclosure: filtering the light does make the unit a tiny bit less efficient than a clear glass tube. You lose a small slice of the total energy to the coating. But for a home or a nursery? It’s a trade-off I’d make every single time. I’d rather lose a tiny bit of efficiency than have a light that feels like a spotlight in an interrogation room. You still get plenty of heat to stay warm in a damp bathroom, just without the eye strain.
