The Struggle with Long Glass Tunnel Kilns (And How We Fix It)
Most infrared lamps stop at 1 or 1.5 meters. That’s fine for small setups. But if you’re running an ultra-long glass tunnel kiln, you can’t just string a bunch of short lamps together and hope for the best. You’ll end up with cold spots. It’s a nightmare for consistency. To fix this, we build custom continuous heating units that push past the 2-meter mark.
Getting the Heat Right
The trick to keeping the temperature steady over a 2-meter span is all about how we handle the wattage per centimeter. We treat these as continuous arrays. No gaps. No “dead zones” between modules. Just a smooth, steady flow of heat. But here’s the thing: you have to watch your voltage drop. If you aren’t careful, the ends of the line will run cooler than the middle. We usually balance the load across several different circuits to keep things even. And if you’re pushing high wattage through a tube that long, don’t skimp on the wiring. You need heavy-gauge cables, or your leads are going to overheat.
Quartz and the “Snap” Factor
We stick with high-purity quartz glass. Why? Because when a heater is 2 meters long, it moves. It expands and contracts as it heats up. Standard glass just can’t handle that kind of stress. The real danger is the mounting. If your brackets are too tight, the tube will bow or, worse, snap. We use floating mounts. It gives the quartz room to breathe, which keeps the whole system from cracking under pressure.
The Trade-off
Going long has its perks. You have way fewer connectors to wire up, and fewer joints mean fewer things that can break. It’s a cleaner setup. But it’s not all sunshine. If a single 2-meter element burns out, you aren’t just swapping a cheap little lamp. You’re dealing with a massive, fragile piece of glass. You’ll need a dedicated lifting jig to get it out without shattering it. Plus, you’ve got to make sure your kiln actually has enough physical room to slide a tube that size in and out. If you’re cramped for space, maintenance becomes a headache real fast.
